Dear colleagues

It’s a pleasure to extend a cordial invitation to convene in Berne on the occasion of the 6th European Day of Regional Anaesthesia. The Board of the Swiss Association of Regional Anaesthesia (SARA) is the local organizer of this event, hosted by Inselspital Institute of Anaesthesiology and Pain medicine. This year’s edition aims to discuss regional anaesthesia as it is embedded in the consciousness of our patients. Apart from our renowned practical ultrasound courses held with experienced instructors, the morning lectures focus on how regional blocks are administrated. Should patients be wide awake, sedated, anaesthetized or dissociated? Are there strategies that bring the analgesic potential of regional anaesthesia to full effect with enduring benefit lasting into the postoperative phase? In the light of the fashionable debate, are regional blocks going to push opioids to the wayside? What are the limits of combined anaesthesia? To discuss all these topics and more, the patient’s subjective consciousness and its gradual alteration via non-pharmacological, systemic pharmacological and regional anaesthesia will be moved to centre-stage. Our faculty draws on rich, practical experience and will communicate possible solutions to every-day clinical problems, drawing on literature and personal expertise of the craft.
