Cardiovascular anaesthesiology plays an important role in reducing perioperative risks for our multi-morbid and ageing patient population. Our research covers preoperative risk management, advanced monitoring, specific organ protection, as well as optimisation of perioperative management and team performance. Projects are typically multidisciplinary and require close collaboration with partners from surgery, cardiology, neuroscience, radiology, haematology, and many other disciplines.

Our group’s research focuses on techniques for monitoring and perioperative imaging of cerebral and myocardial oxygenation, perfusion and function. Bern University Hospital / Inselspital, as the largest cardiovascular surgical and interventional centre in Switzerland, has an extensive case load and expertise in the surgical, hybrid, and interventional management of complex valvular, thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic disease. Our research is always aimed at improving patient outcomes from such perioperative scenarios.
